Environmental Allergen Avoidance

Eczema can be triggered by environmental allergens. Environmental allergens can also cause worsening of hayfever (allergic rhinitis), itchy eyes (allergic conjunctivitis), and asthma.

It is very important to find out which allergens cause the eczema to worsen

  • dust mites are the most common culprit
  • children between 6 months to 2 years old start developing indoor allergen sensitivity to dust, cats, and dogs
  • children between 2 to 7 years old start developing pollen allergy
  • controlling for these environmental allergens will help improve eczema, hayfever, and asthma!

Dust Mite Avoidance

Dust mites are a common trigger of eczema. They love and grow in humid environments. Eliminating dust mites with all the steps below is more effective than only doing dust mite covers or air purifier alone.

1. Wash bedsheets every week with hot water and dry in a hot dryer afterward

2. Encase mattress and pillows in dust mite allergen proof covers

  • These are my favorite dust mite covers which are affordable

3. Vacuum weekly with vacuum with HEPA filter

  • Vacuums with HEPA filters are much more effective at eliminating dust than vacuums without HEPA filters
  • Keep your child away from the room while you are vacuuming so they are not directly exposed to the dust
  • I currently use this Dyson vacuum- it effectively cleans and is very lightweight, which is an extra benefit
  • If you want to splurge, Miele vacuum would be highest quality

4. Remove as much carpet and rugs as possible

5. Use a HEPA Air Purifier daily and place it in your bedroom

  • I am a huge fan of the Honeywell Air Purifier which makes a huge difference in air quality inside our house
  • Honeywell HEPA Air Purifier is highly rated on Consumer Reports and has a high clean air delivery rate (CADR)
  • It is also a true HEPA filter compared to other popular air filter options

Pet Avoidance

1. Removal of pets from home

2. If unable to remove pets from home, keep pets out of bedroom and bed

3. Try to wash dogs at least once a week

4. Vacuum weekly with vacuum with HEPA filter

  • Vacuums with HEPA filters are much more effective at eliminating pet dander than vacuums without HEPA filters
  • My top choice is the Dyson vacuum with a HEPA filter. It cleans very well and is lightweight.
  • For an upgraded vacuum, the Miele vacuum is very high quality.

6. Use a HEPA Air Purifier daily and place it in your bedroom. Since pet dander can be airborne, it may also help to have HEPA Air purifiers in your living room as well.

  • The quality of Honeywell Air Purifier is outstanding
  • Honeywell HEPA Air Purifier is highly rated on Consumer Reports and has a high clean air delivery rate (CADR)
  • It is also a true HEPA filter compared to other popular air filter options

Pollen Avoidance

1. Sleep with the windows closed during spring, summer, and fall so pollen cannot come inside the house

2. Avoid exercising outdoors in early morning hours (4AM-8 AM) since pollen counts are highest at that time

3. After spending a lot of time outdoors around trees, grass, or weeds, remember to rinse off and change clothes  when you come indoors

4. Run your HEPA filter daily in your bedroom and/or other rooms in your home in which you spend the most time

  • Our Honeywell Air Purifier makes a huge difference in air quality inside our house
  • Make sure to close the windows during the day and night when running the HEPA filter or else it will not be able to filter effectively when pollen freely flows in
