Clothing Tips for Eczema

Important Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Dress your baby appropriately so they are not too hot or sweaty
  • In general try to avoid extreme temperatures (either too hot or too cold)
  • Try to use only 100% (or as close to 100%) cotton clothing
  • Wool is an irritant so I would avoid wool too
  • If your baby is having a rash on the back of her/his neck, avoid tags on shirts, turn shirt inside out, or cut off the tag

To help stop itch scratch cycle:

These scratch sleeve PJs are the best. They are a lifesaver at night when eczema is bad.

  •  I like these full PJ sets the best because babies and toddlers can’t wriggle out of them.
  • These PJs are 100% cotton and the closed mittens are silk which prevent your child from scratching.

These scratch sleeves are most helpful for infants (under 1 year old) since older kids can sometimes wriggle out of them.

For infants under 1 years old, you can start with anti-scratch mittens before doing the full PJs.

  • But if your baby keeps taking the mittens off, go with the full PJ set above.

Wet Wraps are also very helpful especially when your baby is scratching a lot

  • First put on moisturizer thick like cake frosting, then put on Unna Wraps (wet)

  • Next:
    • For whole arms/legs or extensive areas: put on 2 sets of PJs (1 regular size and 1 larger size on top)
    • For 1 arm or leg: cut a hole in a cotton adult long sock so this fits over an arm or leg
    • For hands: put on 100% cotton gloves (1 regular size and 1 larger size on top), can also use adult socks for the outer layer
    • For feet: put on cotton socks (1 regular size and 1 larger size on top), can also use adult socks for the outer layer
    • 100% cotton socks are nearly impossible to find, so try to find something close~ 95% cotton like these ones

    • Another option would be to use gauze (infants or toddlers) or Ace bandage (older kids)
    • Band-aid gauze rolls are softer than Kerlix ones, so I prefer using these below

    • Leave the Unna Wraps on at night and take them off the next morning
    • FYI: Unna Wraps can be used without or with topical steroids. Your doctor may recommend that you use topical steroids first before applying Unna Wrap.
